Hi!
Welcome back to homeschool! So you know how I had all those terrific plans for my garden over the summer? Wellllll...they didn't happen. Just before school officially ended for all the public school folk my husband was sent on business to Edmonton for the summer and we spent 2.5 months doing road trips every couple of weeks. It was an EXCELLENT learning experience. And I don't just mean that in the semi sarcastic way that you might imagine when you know that my baby was 4 months old when we started on this adventure. The truth is our summer was really a blast. We did six road trips in all. There was reading and learning and making friends and all kinds of fun. We bought a membership to the Royal Alberta Museum and visited several times for programs in the Wild Alberta Gallery. We went to the science centre twice and the nature centre more than once. We visited the Fort Edmonton Park and the Ukrainian village museum. We even did a day trip to Drumheller to see the dinosaurs at the Royal Tyrell Museum. We went to playgrounds and libraries. We spent an afternoon at World Waterpark and two afternoons at Galaxyland. And we went to the Edmonton Heritage Festival.
In addition to our Edmonton adventures we also spent a weekend in Meadow Lake Saskatchewan and a week at Orthodox family camp in Oregon. Family camp was particularly good. The kids had "classes" with a young Sunday school teacher in which they learned about Noah and the Flood and made crafts and played games with other Orthodox kids. And without us. The parents got to do their own thing. The kids also loved our trip to Saskatchewan (Georgie cried when we left). We had a campfire and stayed in a cabin and Greg let the kids steer the van on the dirt roads by the farm. The freedom and quiet of the country life is terrific for kids.
We did watch a lot more telly than I would have liked and we never managed to stick with an established routine but it was truly an excellent trip in spite of our sudden change of plans. Here's some pictures:

Theo must have thought he'd been granted a visit to heaven, at the dinosaur museum! Looks like a great time!
