Technical difficulties

Routine, routine, routine. It is the only way we get things done without succumbing to insanity. I knew when we started out this fall that it wouldn't be long before I found it challenging to stick to plans. Holidays in particular tend to disrupt things and they seem to come one after another from Thanksgiving till spring break. Last week Daddy took the week off work which further compounded the disruption of Thanksgiving. It was nice to have him home and we did a few special things. But I had to fight pretty hard to keep them on track with school. In the end the only thing we didn't get around to was our weekly science experiment till Monday.

We also got to take our annual trip to the Apple Barn, which was lots of fun. Georgie got to have a date with Daddy and buy a new bike helmet. She has outgrown her pink bike which is just as well since Daddy ran over it with the van a few weeks ago. They are now sharing the blue bike. Theo will need a new one soon but we will have to save it for a future occasion. And as a treat we made a massive cookie with our homeschool friends, Theo has been begging to do since he read "Wild Boars Cook" and found a recipe in the back. 

However, the slight change in routine, the extra sugar, and the addition of an extra person telling her what to do made Georgie exceptionally challenging. She is going through an extremely frustrating stage where she more or less refuses to do anything that is asked of her with the aim of making us put down whatever we are doing to either do it for her or engage her in massive battle to make her do it. This applies to everything from feeding herself to going to the bathroom to cleaning up the toys. And she will scream and throw a terrific fit if we don't oblige her. I dunno what to do about it at all.

 

But other than some disciplinary issues we did pretty well for the week. Got lots of work done in spite of two days off. Theo took on several projects of his own as well. He copied out a music theory worksheet from memory on Monday for fun. We took a trip to One Stop Learning and got him another Draw Then Write book and he surprised me one morning with a whole story about an astronaut. And on Saturday he decided to copy out a universe timeline from his astronomy book. 

We are continuing our science and language lessons. Last week he learned about contractions. And we did more work on history as well. He keeps sneaking ahead on the map work without actually reading the chapters. But we have also been enjoying a kids' history DVD series from the library called The Time Compass. Not particularly accurate but a good basic overview. He has finished his first cursive workbook as well and is eagerly devouring the second one. He is well on his way to writing his narrative work in cursive. Unfortunately his verbal narrations are still a struggle, but his math is picking up again. 

So another good week. Looking forward to getting back into routine before the next holiday.
